                                                                              Sunday 3rd May

·      Margaret: Sandra has heard from Sam that Margaret is continuing to make good progress – they are progressively reducing her oxygen treatment and expect that, all being well, she will be discharged within the next week. Ted’s funeral has been provisionally arranged for Tuesday 12th  May (subject to Margaret’s health).  Further details in due course.

·      Megan: Megan was readmitted to Airedale early on Saturday as a precaution, having had a fall. She was discharged again on Saturday evening, and is now back home again. Megan would like to thank everyone for all the cards, phone calls and support she has received, both while she was in hospital and since she has been home – she has really appreciated it

·     Sarah: Sarah is now variously experiencing most of the advertised symptoms of the early stages other than fever. The headache and dizziness are particularly bad, along with the cough, breathlessness and the shakes. We still have no idea how she got it. We managed to get a test and it was collected this morning with a “target” of 1 – 2 days for a result but potentially up to 5 days apparently. However, given the shambolic process and contradictory instructions, we have little confidence in the tests and even if it comes back clear, we will continue to isolate / quarantine in line with guidelines, as though it is the virus.

I have spent a fair bit of time working out where you go when you develop symptoms and how the whole test thing works, so if anyone needs any pointers, feel free to call me.

·     Bins this week: Green and blue bin collections will take place a day early this week (May 4 to May 8) due to the Bank Holiday.  There will be no collections on Friday May 8.

                                                                              Tuesday 28th April

·     Covid-19 in Buckden Earlier this afternoon I had a phone call from the Director of Public Health for North Yorkshire – Dr Lincoln Sargeant. He had heard through CDC about the Covid-19 outbreak in Buckden; he wanted to know what had happened, and what had been done as a result. His view was that everything that was done, both at the time and since, was correct; in particular he commended the actions of the people who helped Ted on Tuesday afternoon, which he felt were absolutely appropriate in the circumstances.

·      Margaret: Sandra has heard from Sam this morning. Margaret is continuing to make good progress

·      Megan: Megan is expected to be discharged from hospital today and will be returning with an appropriate care package. Everyone should be aware that Megan will be shielding, and while we will be supporting Megan at arm’s length, we have been instructed that on no account should anyone enter her home, expect for the designated carers until further notice. This is to protect Megan, and also other members of our community

·     Lynn & Steve: Living at The Old Chapel, Lynn & Steve are aware that there is a small chance that may have come into contact with the virus, although they have been able to maintain complete social distancing at all times. They have decided therefore, that while strict self-isolation might not be necessary, they should reduce their movements and contact with places within the village. As a result, they will probably not see anyone for a couple of weeks, not even from a distance, and ask that you avoid them for the time being.

·     Community Support Network – Support for communities through the coming weeks and months The way in which community support is being organised and provided locally is becoming clearer, after a fairly muddled couple of weeks. Across Craven lots of communities are getting together – as we have – putting in place communication networks to offer and ask for help from friends and neighbours.

·     Meanwhile, NYCC and CDC have been working together to put in place an organisation and resources to provide additional support in the event that communities are not able to help themselves. The could either because they are unable to organise to help their own communities, or because of any potential future scenario where the impact of the infection itself, or the interruption of supplies and services, or financial hardship,  became sufficiently serious in a community, that it no longer had the necessary resources to help itself.

·     It is clear that the preferred approach is that communities as far as possible support themselves, as they are best placed to hear about and understand local needs and respond to them quickly, and at the present stage in the pandemic this is what is happening. However, the councils are, quite rightly, planning for the worst and putting in place mechanisms to provide additional support. Hopefully they won’t be needed, but it is good to know they will be there.

·     So, NYCC and Craven have nominated a network of four “Community Support Organisations” (CSOs) covering Craven; these are: Age UK North Craven, Grassington Hub, SELFA, and Glusburn Institute.

·     Group such as ourselves in the Buckden Parish community are designated as “Community Mutual Aid” groups. In village communities these are typically informal networks of people who already know each other. In the towns they are different and are operating in different ways. However, and importantly, all the Community Mutual Aid Groups can go to one of the CSOs if they need additional resources or support which they are unable to provide themselves. In our case we are aligned to Grassington Hub and we are in communication with them, as well as the team at CDC.

·     The CDC team have produced a fact sheet about how to help safely, which is available here www.buckden.org/How to Help Safely.pdf

·     The mechanism for support for those experiencing financial hardship as a consequence of the pandemic is still being developed. However it will rely on an application form being submitted identifying what is required, and CDC will purchase and supply items / services on behalf of the applicants.

·     As further details of this become clear, we will include in these updates

·         Craven District Council now seem to be getting organised. They have been in touch telling us about various things they are setting up, including some funding to be made available (details to follow about exactly what this is all about) and back-up resources where communities are not able to cope with the needs of their local communities – the strategy seems to be that where communities can help their own people this is likely to be the quickest and most effective approach, but there is a recognition that this will not always be feasible. They also mention the volunteer badge scheme (previously mentioned here, but this is apparently still in the planning stage).

They have set up a web page  with access to relevant information which can be found here: https://www.cravendc.gov.uk/coronavirus-advice-and-information/

Finally, they advise us to be careful of the growing number of Coronavirus scams out there – they have developed a flyer which is included at the bottom of this email

·       The George Inn…at home A message from Jackie & Ed: We really wanted to thank you for the uptake on The George Inn ..... at Home, ready meals. However it would appear that as a consequence of new government directives published on Friday, we are facing a dilemma insomuch as it would appear that our home delivery service is not allowed to generate any revenue! We would really like to continue to support our community with this service as we feel it affords us all the opportunity to stay safer and more healthy than without it. We have therefore taken the decision to try and keep this community service going, with no charge, as long as we are able whilst the current 'lockdown' is in force. We would also like to reuse the plastic containers that we supply the meals in - so if you could return the old containers when you receive your next delivery that would be great.

o  The Spar at Threshfield yesterday was down on stock but still has a good range of basics. The deli was closed. The butchers had a much-reduced choice – very little chicken, meat tended to be the more expensive cuts.

o   When replying to a message, if you swipe right on the message you are replying to, it then links your reply to the message you are replying to.

o   The group is private – only members of the group can see the posts. However, anything you post can be seen by all the members of the group, so if you have a private message for one member, then it is better to WhatsApp them personally, rather than the group

o   If you add people and their phone numbers to your contacts list on your phone, you will be able to see who is posting what - you can use the lists I have been posting for this

·       If you don’t know what WhatsApp is, it’s basically group text chat – and with the ability to share pics, vids etc. The group is private and the messages are encrypted so it is secure. The idea is to keep people in Buckden touch during the Covid-19 outbreak - and perhaps beyond. People can post any info you think may be of help to the group - or provide amusement! You can also tell us if you are “quarantining”, “self-isolating”, “social distancing”, “strict social distancing”, “shielding” or whatever variant of “not going out” applies to you. When we are not meeting face to face it is good to be able to catch up online.

Watch this space

·         Dentists –Situation at the dentists was somewhat 'fluid' last week;  they’ve been classed as key workers, so are planning to stay open, but in what capacity going forward is a bit unknown for now. May change but for now it's basically same as GP surgery – don’t go unless you have an appointment, and definitely don't go if you have any symptoms. Hoping for an update tomorrow.

·       Fruit & Veg boxes – Mixed Fruit and Veg boxes are available through &Then deli in Kettlewell. From £12 - £25. Call Nicky on 07976810356

·         More news from Spain – More news of Stella and Robin’s experiences from their camp-site lock down in Spain.

o  Stella writes: “So, news from lock down in Spain. We have a running/ walking circuit of 0.7k; space outside the van (6x2m inside); 50 min supermarket queue at 2m apart but no shortages of anything. No vehicles, no dogs, no music, nada, silence except for birds. Cold and wet. Survived 1st week”.

o  Robin writes: “Stella has gone off to the shop so while I finish my tea I will tell you about last night. Late evening, and I did not think to check the time, we heard some music but also lots of emergency sirens with varying tones. What sort of an incident could demand so many emergency vehicles? We wondered if there was an illegal rave in protest against quarantine regulations and the authorities wanted to clamp down hard. In retrospect we think it may be music and singing in support of the health services (as in Italy) with the sirens of public services joining in. We'll see if there's a regular evening slot. Could be wrong”.

·         &Then Deli – Kettlewell – Nicky White, who has opened the new tasting deli in Kettlewell, tells us that she can get , white, granary or wholemeal loaves. Also milk, eggs, butter, orange juice and yoghurts as well as cheeses and crackers, chorizo, salami, hot/cold smoked salmon, jams, a few Yorkshire provender soups, soup/risotto packs and of course beers and wine! She may be able to deliver. Nicky’s number is 07976810356.

·         Kettlewell Shop – Simon at the shop tells us that they are  doing everything they can to keep stocked up. We have supplies of pasta, rice, milk and eggs and we are having deliveries of bakery, chilled and frozen products regularly as far we can. At the moment we have a good stock. We are taking orders and delivering to those who have self-isolated or just don’t want to come out and will continue to support Upper Wharfedale and Littondale as things escalate. If you can order in advance we can get most things in. We are taking orders for fresh meat which will be shipped in from Weatherhead Butchers. Fresh fruit and vegetables are arriving on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Please contact us if you need anything either by phone (01756) 760221 or email orders@kettlewellvillagestore.co.uk.

·         The Racehorses – have announced that they are now doing take-away meals – See their website or Facebook page

·         News from Spain – from our roving reporter - Robin (who is stuck in Spain) writes:Well, we're still in Spain locked down within a small site at Totana with five other vans. Only allowed out for food, medicines and fuel. The site is 300 metres long and we can run, walk, and cycle up and down. Only one person per household is allowed out to shop at any time. 40-minute walk to nearest shop but driving down is allowed. Government says sites should be closed from Monday but local indications are that we will be ok as we are pretty well self-contained. The only crossing now possible is from Calais which is 1200 miles away. Unfortunately weather is poor for the next week. We are not in a high-risk area locally but shall play it by ear. Just got baker delivery of bread and croissants to the site (5 days per week). So that's our exciting life - not quite the thrilling life of Buckden. Look after yourselves.”
