For the second year in a row Buckden villagers battled the elements to put on their traditional Gala, proceeds from which go to maintaining the Village Hall for use by the whole village and visitors to Upper Wharfedale. Despite continuous rain, a good crowd attended to see the Sheep Show and Fell Race and to listen to the authentic sound of the Lofthouse and Middlesmoor Silver Band. Delicious homemade cakes and jams were on offer as well as locally made handicrafts. Children of all ages tested their skills to win a coconut at the shy or to “Bat the Rat”. Locally sourced (and anonymously donated – thank you!) sausages in a bap were a big success as was the time-honoured tea room with more homemade fare. Buckden resident and former art gallery proprietor, Gordon Nowell, mounted an eye catching exhibition of photographs of the Dales and judged the photographic competition. Colourful commentary for the afternoon was provided by the ubiquitous Roger Ingham. This year’s gala dance will be held in the Village Hall on Saturday 5 July (tel. 760883). The village is most grateful to all individuals and businesses who supported this year’s event, in particular, Copper Dragon Brewery of Skipton the main sponsors.
